Happy Place of Yoga

Greetings, Giddy Gabbers,

Happiness is a goal that we all seek, but really defines happiness? A recent study in the Journal of Positive Psychology suggests that happiness as a goal itself was connected to shallow or fleeting emotions whereas meaningful experiences were linked with personal fulfillment.

The study found that even if the experiences involved hard work or stress, they still led to a happier feeling. Also, experiences linked with close, personal relationships, self-expression, and making a positive impact on others’ lives led to more happiness.

“A simple way to seek more meaning is to engage in activities that reflect your identity and give you a sense of purpose in your community,” says Jenna Blumefield from Yoga Journal magazine. This might be activities like volunteering, cooking for others, or even planning a party for someone.

This is why coming to yoga can be a place for finding happiness: You still experience a sense of self while doing yoga in a community setting. Your “Namaste” (the light in me bows to the light in you”) is a way of adding meaning to your yoga practice. Yes, you are there for you, but particularly with Vinyasa Flow, you can experience a feeling of unity while also appreciating moving together as a whole.
