Relax! It’s Only Meditation!

Greetings, Marvelous Meditators!

Meditation sounds serious sometimes. We feel like we have to force it to make it happen or find the perfect Zen place to relax and breathe. Although this can help with the process, I find it comforting to know that I can meditate anywhere!

Try this the next time you attempt it:
Think of the inside of your head like a movie screen; sounds go in, images appear, they affect your thoughts. But as you breathe and close your eyes, just let the images float across the screen, like a stage in your head, where they go in one ear and out the other. Sounds silly, but it helps in PERMITTING yourself to have the chatter without being attached to it. Noises will be there but you don’t have to latch on to them. You also can relax in knowing that you have the ability to come back to your breath and your mantra if you have one such as, “I’m breathing in. I’m breathing out.” This way, you don’t have to give up on meditating because it’s not the perfect setting. YOU have the control and it doesn’t have to be quiet and serious.

Another technique I like to incorporate to help in dealing with distractions during meditation is to SMILE INTERNALLY. Yes, imagine yourself smiling inside your body (and if you want to actually smile that is good, too.) That way, if a funky sound comes up like a gurgling stomach, or a neighbor yelling at their dog, or a ring tone going off to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy, then you are already in a relaxed, “amused,” accepting state of mind.
